Matthias Brenneke specialises in dispute resolution, litigation and arbitration.
Before joining MANNER SPANGENBERG, he completed his legal traineeship (Referendariat, Second German State Exam, Hamburg 2021) with stages at
MANNER SPANGENBERG as well as the Arbitration & Litigation Practice Group of the international law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek N.V. (Amsterdam, Netherlands). Furthermore, his legal training led him to the German Embassy Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and to the Hamburg Port Authority. Prior to his legal traineeship, he gained experience as an academic assistant at the Disputes, Litigation and Arbitration department of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP as well as the Real Estate department of Clifford Chance LLP.
Matthias Brenneke studied law at the University of Münster (First German State Exam, 2017) including an exchange semester at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Spain. For his achievements in the First State Exam, he received an award from the Friends of the Law Faculty Association (Freundeskreis Rechtswissenschaft e.V., Münster). Subsequently, he obtained a LL.M. (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam while focusing on International Investment Law, Arbitration and International Humanitarian Law. His article on “Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems and their Compatibility with International Humanitarian Law: A Primer on the Debate” was published by T. D. Gill et al. (eds.) in the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law 2018.
Matthias Brenneke’s working languages are English and German. He also has a very good knowledge of Dutch.
